It was a bizarre day in the markets, as NASDAQ halted trading for over 3 hours because of a technical problem. So, for a major part of the trading session, nothing much happened. Thank goodness there was nothing major, news wise, going on today. Stocks had been higher before the glitch, and once trading on the NASDAQ began again in the final hour of the session, shares continued to hold onto the gains.

By the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 66 points to finish the day at 14,963. The S&P 500 was up 14 points to close at 1656. Gold was up $4 to trade at $1374 per ounce, while oil was up $1.21 to trade at $105.06 per barrel WTI. The bulls were most likely encouraged that stocks held onto gains despite the 10 year Treasury note rising to 2.90%.

This morning’s only pertinent economic news was the weekly jobless claims number which, though slightly worse than last week still continued to show an improving trend. It will be interesting to see how markets react tomorrow after today’s trading delays. We’ll give you a play by play summary tomorrow afternoon.

Have a nice evening everyone.
