Stocks were able to carve out some gains today, in what was a quiet news day economically speaking. The weekly jobless claims number was as expected and although Alcoa missed a bit on revenues and sold off some, the rest of the market was unaffected by the season’s first earnings report.

By the close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 56 points to finish the day at 17,958. The S&P 500 was up 9 points to close at 2091. Gold was down $8.50 to trade at $1194 per ounce, while oil was up $.25 to trade at $50.67 per barrel WTI.

We get a couple more speeches from Fed officials tomorrow, but other than that this somewhat quiet week should remain so. Earnings season will pick up the pace next week and keep us busy for the next few. We’ll let you know how the week finishes out tomorrow.

Have a nice evening everyone.
